| WEEE takes hold on the UK. | | Today the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations have come into effect in the UK. This places responsibilities on users, producers and distributors of electrical and electronic equipment to cover their safe disposal at the end of its life.
It also requires all Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) covered by the regulations to be covered by a crossed-out wheely bin icon.
So what does this have to do with the Internet? Well any company supplying and selling electrical and electronic equipment to end users must:
- Provide information on the environmental impacts of electrical and electronic equipment and WEEE, reasons for separating WEEE from other waste, the meaning of the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol and how users can safely deposit WEEE for proper treatment and recycling free of charge. You must keep records of this information for four years.
- Display information to customers on the benefits of take-back schemes.
- Establish an in-store take-back scheme or join the distributor take-back scheme.
For those trading on the Internet it means they must provide a method for the takeback of WEEE equipment when new goods are purchased - either through grants to their local authority or allowing WEEE to be sent back to them to manage their disposal.
